  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a sheet cake pan.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt butter with water and cocoa in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour the hot mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Add the eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk to the mixture and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the frosting, heat butter, cocoa, and milk in a saucepan, then stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Spread the frosting over the warm cake and let cool before serving.
