A classic Texas Sheet Cake that’s rich, moist, and perfect for gatherings, with a delicious chocolate flavor and creamy frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan to ensure an easy release of the cake once it’s baked.
  2. Combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk until well mixed and set aside.
  3. Melt the unsalted butter and cocoa powder over medium heat in a saucepan. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  4. Pour the hot cocoa mixture directly into the bowl of dry ingredients. Stir until everything is well combined.
  5. Whisk together the eggs, sour cream, vanilla extract, and buttermilk in a separate bowl. Pour this mixture into the batter and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan, spreading it evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the frosting by combining butter, cocoa powder, and milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, and stir in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Once the cake has cooled completely, pour the frosting over the top, spreading it evenly. Let it set for a few minutes, slice, serve, and enjoy!
