A comforting dish combining caramelized onions, savory beef, and fluffy rice, inspired by classic French onion soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 – 3 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
  • 3 – 4 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or Italian seasoning
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 ½ cups long-grain rice
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: shredded cheese (Swiss, Gruyère, or cheddar)
  • Optional: fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat your oil or butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and thyme, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef to the pot, breaking it up as it cooks until browned and thoroughly cooked through.
  5. Season with salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
  6. Incorporate the rice into the mixture, ensuring it combines evenly with the beef and onions.
  7. Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a vigorous boil.
  8. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 18–20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  9. Fluff the rice with a fork, then top with shredded cheese if you’re feeling indulgent, letting it melt into the dish.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm, relishing the hearty flavors.

Notes

Pair with a simple green salad or crusty bread, and consider a glass of red wine for an elegant touch.
