A comforting classic dish of crispy battered fish served with golden fries, perfect for cozy evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces of white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beer (or sparkling water)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Potatoes (for fries)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Malt vinegar (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot over medium-high heat until it reaches between 350°F and 375°F.
  2. Prepare the potatoes by cutting them into thick fries and soaking in water for 10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
  3. Create the batter by mixing flour, beer (or sparkling water), and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.
  4. Coat each fish fillet in the batter, letting excess drip off before frying in hot oil for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Fry the potatoes in the same oil after the fish is done, for 6-8 minutes until crispy and golden.
  6. Plate the fish and fries and serve with malt vinegar on the side if desired.

Notes

For extra crispy fries, ensure they are well-dried after soaking and maintain a consistent oil temperature during frying.
