Delight in the sweet, chewy texture of candied orange peels, perfect for snacking or as a garnish.

Ingredients

  • 4 fresh unwaxed oranges
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Optional spices: cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly under cold water.
  2. Peel the oranges and slice the peels into thin strips (about 1/4 inch wide).
  3. Boil the sliced peels in a pot of cold water for 10 minutes; drain and repeat 2-3 times.
  4. Make the syrup by combining 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar; stir over medium heat until dissolved.
  5. Simmer the boiled peels in the syrup over low heat for about 45 minutes until translucent.
  6. Dry the candied peels on a cooling rack lined with parchment paper for several hours or overnight.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks or refrigerate for a month.
