Delicious crispy tofu cubes coated in a homemade teriyaki sauce, perfect for a savory and sweet bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14 oz) firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil for frying
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Drain the tofu. Wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels, then place a heavy object on top to press it down for about 15-30 minutes.
  2. Cube the tofu into bite-sized cubes (approximately 1-inch pieces).
  3. Whisk together the soy sauce, maple syrup or brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes in a medium mixing bowl.
  4. Prepare the cornstarch coating in a separate shallow dish, dredge each tofu cube, ensuring all sides are coated evenly.
  5. Heat a large non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat, and add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan generously.
  6. Fry the tofu cubes in a single layer for about 3-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Combine with the teriyaki sauce, gently toss, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Serve immediately with garnishes of sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in a skillet to regain the crispy texture.
