Recreate the delightful flavors of takeout with this crispy homemade orange chicken, featuring a sweet and tangy sauce that adds brightness to each bite.

  • 2 lbs boneless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp sunflower oil
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1/2 cup cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic (crushed)
  • 1 Tbsp orange juice concentrate

Instructions

  1. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Prepare the coating by whisking the egg, sunflower oil, salt, and pepper together.
  3. Mix in the cornstarch and flour.
  4. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Coat each piece of chicken and fry in batches.
  6. Make the sauce by mixing vinegar, sugar, water, soy sauce, garlic, and orange juice concentrate in a saucepan.
  7. Thicken the sauce with a cornstarch slurry.
  8. Toss the fried chicken in the sauce and serve.

Notes

For extra crunch, consider double-dipping the chicken pieces before frying. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.
