A healthier take on the classic blooming onion, made crispy in an air fryer with less oil and all the flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the onion to create the blooming effect by slicing off the top and making vertical cuts.
  3. Mix the all-purpose flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Dip the prepared onion generously in buttermilk.
  5. Transfer the onion to the seasoned flour mixture for an even coating.
  6. Spray the onion lightly with cooking spray and coat it with breadcrumbs.
  7. Place the coated onion in the air fryer basket, ensuring it is not squished.
  8. Air fry for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Notes

Use a large onion for plenty of “petals.” Pre-cut the onion ahead of time for extra flavor. Experiment with spices for a personal touch.
