Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced (about 1 cup)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 6 hamburger buns, torn into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup dill pickles, chopped
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 8 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Sautéing the Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent and fragrant—about 5 minutes.
  2. Browning the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat, then stir in Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well and remove from heat.
  3. Preparing the Bun Layer: In a separate bowl, tear the hamburger buns into bite-sized pieces. Drizzle them with the melted butter and toss until well coated.
  4. Making the Special Sauce: In another bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white vinegar, sugar, paprika, and remaining garlic and onion powders.
  5. Assembling the Casserole: In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spread half of the torn hamburger buns on the bottom. Layer half of the beef mixture on top, followed by half of the special sauce. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over this layer. Repeat the layers with the remaining buns, beef, sauce, and cheese.
  6. Finishing Touches: Top the casserole with chopped dill pickles, diced onion, and slices of American cheese. Finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
  7. Baking It: Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  8. Cooling & Serving: Once out of the oven, let the casserole cool for about 10 minutes. Top with shredded lettuce and serve warm.

Notes
