A classic Greek stew that combines tender beef, aromatic spices, and rich flavors, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into chunks
  • 4 medium onions, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large pot over medium heat, heat olive oil and add the chunks of beef. Allow them to brown on all sides, forming a beautiful crust that locks in the juices.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Once the beef is browned, remove it and set aside. In the same pot, add the sliced onions and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions become soft and translucent.
  3. Combine the Ingredients: Return the beef to the pot and add the diced tomatoes, red wine, ground cinnamon, bay leaves, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Let it Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and cover the pot. Let it simmer gently for about 120 to 180 minutes.
  5. Final Touches: Once the beef is fork-tender, remove the bay leaves. Taste the stew and adjust the seasoning as needed. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

For a thicker sauce, let it simmer uncovered for the last 30 minutes. Marinating the beef in red wine can enhance the flavor.
