A comforting classic dish with layers of Yukon Gold potatoes, rich creamy sauce, and savory ham, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cooked ham, diced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large baking dish generously with butter.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced onions and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for one minute; then gradually whisk in the heavy cream and milk.
  4. Allow the mixture to thicken and bubble for about 3 minutes.
  5. In the greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly across the bottom.
  6. Next, add half of the diced ham followed by half of the creamy sauce.
  7. Repeat the layers: remaining sliced potatoes, ham, and finishing with the rest of the creamy sauce.
  8. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese generously over the top.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.

Notes

Let the dish rest for 10 minutes after baking for easier serving. Freezes well if stored in a suitable container.
